KOLKATA – Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opening batter Abhishek Sharma has been sanctioned by the IPL Governing Council following a disciplinary incident during his team’s dominant victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens.
Despite a stellar performance on the field, Sharma’s conduct drew the ire of match officials, leading to a fine of 25% of his match fees and the accumulation of one demerit point.
The Incident
The BCCI confirmed that Sharma committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.3 of the IPL Code of Conduct. This specific article pertains to the “use of an audible obscenity during a match. “While the official statement did not highlight the exact moment the breach occurred, it noted that the all-rounder admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the Match Referee. Under IPL regulations for Level 1 breaches, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.
Bitter-Sweet Outing for Abhishek Sharma
The disciplinary action comes as a dampener on what was otherwise a brilliant night for the young left-hander. Sharma played a pivotal role in SRH’s victory, smashing 48 runs off just 21 deliveries, a knock decorated with four boundaries and four towering sixes.
Alongside opening partner Travis Head (46), Sharma helped forge an explosive 82-run stand in just 34 balls, laying the foundation for SRH’s massive total of 226/8.
What’s Next?
While a Level 1 offence is the least severe penalty in the IPL’s disciplinary framework, the demerit point will stay on Sharma’s record. A further accumulation of demerit points in future matches could lead to a suspension.Sunrisers Hyderabad will look to keep their momentum going as the tournament progresses, though the team management will likely advise their star opener to keep his emotions in check during high-pressure moments.
